What Is Schizophrenia?
Schizophrenia is defined as a chronic psychiatric disorder. It causes people to experience delusions, hallucinations, and disordered thinking and behavior. These distortions of reality can impair normal daily functioning and can be a disabling condition.
It affects around 1% of the world’s population; around 3.5 million people in the United States are diagnosed with schizophrenia. The majority of people with schizophrenia develop it between the ages of 16 and 25. Research has determined that it is at least partially a genetic condition.
In terms of recovery, studies indicate that approximately one-quarter of people with schizophrenia recover completely. Half of the sufferers improve over a 10-year period, while the remaining one-quarter do not show improvement over time.
Only half of the people with schizophrenia have received treatment, making recovery far more difficult. It is estimated that as many as half of homeless adults suffer from schizophrenia.
What Are the Symptoms?
There is a range of symptoms, including early symptoms, positive symptoms, negative symptoms, and cognitive symptoms. Early symptoms, which typically occur in the teenage years or early 20s, maybe overlooked and passed off as adolescent behavior.
Early symptoms of schizophrenia include:

- Sleep problems

- Increased agitation and irritability
Negative symptoms of schizophrenia include:

A mental health professional is best placed to make a diagnosis for schizophrenia. A physical exam, imaging test, and blood work may form part of any such psychiatric examination. Schizophrenia may be diagnosed should an individual have symptoms including delusion, hallucination, and disorganized speech regularly.
Available Treatment Options
There is as of yet no cure for schizophrenia, therefore ongoing treatment is the best course of action. Such treatment can reduce the symptoms of schizophrenia and allow an individual to live a more normal life. Medication is one treatment option, particularly to prevent symptoms such as delusions and hallucinations.
Psychosocial intervention is a popular and effective method for combating the effects of schizophrenia. Therapy sessions can enable an individual to deal with their illness and live a fuller life.
